The insulated foil helps keep warm air in and cool air in, reducing heat loss and keeping your home warm in winter. Here is a comprehensive guide to installing foil insulation on the roof of your home.
Prepare the Roof
First, make sure the roof is free of debris and free of any existing insulation. If the existing tile or slate is loose or damaged, you may need to remove it. Once you've done this, you should inspect the interior of the roof space and make sure it looks structurally sound before proceeding with the installation. You should also check the interior for signs of moisture or condensation, as this may indicate that you need to further improve ventilation before installing foil insulation.
Measure and Cut Aluminium Foil Insulation
Once the roof is prepped, use a tape measure to measure the areas that need insulation, then use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the foil insulation accordingly (be sure to wear protective gloves when doing this). Depending on the type of insulation you're using, it can come in rolls or pre-cut panels, so double-check before cutting anything!
Install Foil Insulation
If you are using fiberglass quilt-type insulation, it should be laid directly on the underside of the roof and then covered with a breathable membrane material. If you are using reflective bubble-wrap type foil insulation, it should be laid directly over the existing felt material (or another breathable membrane) with the bubble side up and the edges sealed with tape or mastic foam sealant to secure There are no gaps between the sheets and the surrounding felt/membrane material.
Hold the Insulation in Place
Finally, secure each piece of insulation foil firmly in place by nailing wooden strips around its perimeter; this will act as a secure bracket holding everything firmly in place while also protecting the perimeter edge from wind uplift or Damage caused by the ingress of moisture through any gaps that may exist between the felt/membrane material and the surrounding structure. It is also recommended that all wood slats used to be treated with a wood preservative prior to installation to prevent them from rotting due to prolonged exposure to weather conditions such as rain and snow.
By following these steps correctly, you can install foil insulation on your roof quickly and easily! Not only will doing this help reduce your heating bills over time, but it will also ensure that your home stays warm in the winter months - an all-around more comfortable living environment for those who live in it!
